Lecture #1 and part of #2: Dietary Recommendations (DRIs, Dietary Guidelines, MyPlate) 1. Know the names of the agencies responsible for food guides and nutrition standards. 2. Know the 4 elements of the DRIs, and the AMDR (meaning as well as percent ranges). a. Know why the RDA covers 97-98% of the nutrient requirement for healthy individuals. b. Know when an AI is used rather than an RDA. c. Know the difference between an AI and an RDA. d. Know the difference between the EAR and the RDA and AI. 3. Be familiar with the ages of the life stage groups. 4. Know how to estimate adequacy of intakes for both individuals and groups. 5. Know the types of data that are used in determining the DRIs (strength of evidence). 6. Be able to label a graph (U-shaped curve) of risk of inadequacy, risk of excess as nutrient intake increases. 7. Know how the ULs should be interpreted. 8. Know the relationship between the DRIs, Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGAs), and MyPlate. a. Know the purpose of each of the above. 9.
