7. Explain the formation of the four geotectonic provinces of the Bengal Basin
in the light of the Plate Tectonics.
Introduction
The Bengal Basin is in the northeastern part of the Indian subcontinent that is between the Indian shield
and the Indo-Burman ranges. This Bengal basin comprises of three distinctive geotectonic provinces that
are:
The Stable Shelf or Province 1
The Central Deep Basin or Province 2 (from the Syllhet Trough in the northeast towards the
Hatia Trough in the south)
The Chittagong-Tripura Fold Belt (CTFB) or Province 3
