Syracuse Healthcare Institution has performed at its best regarding quality and safety by
incorporating a communication tool. This computerized tool was developed to reduce the rate of
scheduling errors and to promote precise communication. Prior to the development of this tool,
surgical information was handwritten by the surgeon. Information provided on the scheduling
sheet included procedure, diagnosis, length of surgery, required equipment, CPT code, type of
anesthesia, required medical clearance, and post-operative care. After the surgeon completed this
sheet, it was given to the Nurse Coordinator. The nurse coordinator then entered the information
into the system. Several errors derived from this process resulted in surgical delays. Surveillance
of neighboring hospitals has assisted in the development of a computerized "Surgical Posting
Template." The template has been used by other affiliated hospitals and has been successful in
preventing surgery delays. Within the first 6-month of implementing this template, surgery has
seen a decrease in surgical delays and cancellations; and a reduction in turnover time between
cases. The National Utilization Management Integration (2021) reports have identified a few
opportunities for improvement, such as outstanding surgery request greater than 30 days. Due to
this template, the surgery unit can track all requests, which prevents a patient from "falling
through the cracks." Nurses from the Same-Day Surgery and outpatient areas were essential in
the development of this tool. Surgery is now the cornerstone for providing high-quality health
care as a result of this template.
The primary goal of adopting this tool was to provide quality care and to improve
outcomes. Safe protocols were placed to avoid harm to patients from the care, such as surgery.
For quality improvement, Syracuse Healthcare organization has used teams to collect data from
surrounding hospitals to determine if the selected intervention positively impacts outcomes.
Accomplishing these goals has led to ethical and culturally sensitive improvements in quality by
decreasing error. The organization holds patient quality care and safety with no delays,
leadership excellence, and innovation as the core elements of its culture (Hung et al., 2018). Even
before adopting the scheduling tool to reduce scheduling errors, the organization was striving to
prevent delays for the cases requiring urgent care. The organization also conformed to quality
care demands and prioritized the safety of patients. The organization also promotes ethical
innovations to improve the quality of care services to the patients. Therefore, the computerized
system's adoption to reduce errors in scheduling is in line with the organizational culture of
expediting care delivery. Adopting the computerized system in scheduling has also positively
impacted the organization’s culture by enhancing care delivery without delays. The medical
practitioners in this organization have also conformed to the needs of the computerized system to
reduce scheduling errors and enhance care delivery for the patients.
Ethics are the moral principles in an organization that guides individual behaviors. The
purpose of having ethics in an organization is to have a standard of behaviors allowed in the
organization. On the other hand, culture refers to the values, goals, attitudes, outlooks, and
practices shared and accepted within an organization (Ladd et al., 2020). Thus, in this
organization, the culture of prioritizing quality care delivery, patient safety, and excellent
leadership has influenced what employees identify with as ethical. Adopting the computerized
system in scheduling care within the organization has further influenced ethics within the
organization. For instance, the medical practitioners define what ethical based on its status in the
organizational culture is. The mission and vision of the organization are also inclined to quality
care delivery which also conforms to its culture and ethics. Thus, the adoption of the
computerized system to reduce errors in scheduling has positively impacted compliance with the
organization's ethics and culture. The employees determine what is ethically right based on the
