Week 3: Knowledge Management and Advanced Nursing Practice
Derived from your healthcare experience, distinguish the components of knowledge
management from an advanced nursing practice perspective.
1.What is meant by knowledge management in advanced nursing practice? How have
you seen knowledge management at work in your advanced nursing practice or in the
practice of other doctor nurse practice (DNP)-prepared nurses?
According to Karamitri, Taliap, & Bellali (2017), knowledge management is a systematic
process utilized by organizations and individuals to share, reserve, save, adapt and use
knowledge to solve organizational problems, to make evidenced-based decisions on patient care
and to promote the objectives of the organization. Knowledge management also preserves the
m
er as
knowledge created by employees in the healthcare settings. The two types of knowledge
discussed by Sullivan, Limaye, Mitchell & D’Adamo (2015), were explicit and tacit. Explicit
co
eH w
knowledge is expressed in words and is shared in written documents, manuals and databases.
Tacit knowledge is produced in the mind and is shared through discussions, stories, observation,
o.
and personal interaction. Knowledge management allows us to create, capture, develop, share
rs e
both knowledges and to translate the knowledge into action.
ou urc
The efforts to engage knowledge management in advanced practice contribute to evidence-based
practice because the aim of health research is to integrate the knowledge gained from evidence
o
and use it to change or enhance policies and practice. Knowledge can not change patient
aC s
outcomes unless it is translated and adopted by healthcare systems, organizations, and clinicians
vi y re
(Prihodova, Guerin, Tanney & Kernohan, 2018). The average gap from discovery of knowledge
to its implementation into practice is 17 years. Critical pathways, care protocols and clinical
practice guidelines help bride this gap (White, Dudley-Brown & Terrhar, 2016).

As an advanced practice nurse and as a DNP-prepared nurse I will continue to promote the
implementation of evidence-based medicine by identifying, analyzing and translating both
ar stu
explicit and tacit knowledge through clinical problem-solving and facilitating change in my field.
