Tutorial 2 - Understanding Organisations: Theory and
Practice
Discussions on team charters/1
Assess content functionally:
Did you consider all issues in depth?
- Consider what students are available for group discussions (If for
example a student isn’t available for a group discussion, then how
will the group manage that?)
o Consider how much time is needed for group discussions
o The organiser of the group should also consider the members’
schedules (When are they available?)
- Consider what the roles of each group member will be
Are your agreed guidelines coherent with your stated purposes?
- Ask this amongst your group
Are your principles and values clearly actionable?
- Ask this amongst your group
Discussion on team charters/2
What type of organisation have you designed for your team (e.g. which
metaphor would better represent it)?
- Is your organisation administrative, functional or something else?
What are the unstated assumptions (e.g. about hierarchy, values, norms
etc.) that emerge from your charters?
- An example of the unstated assumption could be the person who is
the organiser of the group (Considering the roles of the group)
o The organiser of the group can become apparent when they
start taking leadership roles such as delegating tasks to group
members, scheduling group meetings and sparking
communication through online group chats
Page 1
, How much space does the organisation you created leaves to individual
freedom and well-being?
- Again, this is something the organiser of the group should consider –
They need to be able to balance both the productivity of the group
and the individuals’ freedom and well-being
Preparing Team assignment (Assessment 2)
Analyse an organisation of your choice (access? Data?)
Select 2 academic papers from the list provided in UTS online: why these
two?
The purpose of the report: to show you can ‘translate’ academic research
and apply organisation theory in a real world setting
Include:
- Description of the organisations and of a specific issue (challenge or
opportunity) that it’s facing
- Succinct description of the content of the 2 papers in plain English
- Explain why their theoretical insights are relevant for the
organisation: What do they reveal?
- Point out specific recommendations (actions/strategies) deriving
meaning from these theoretical insight
Team work: Planning team assignment
Project plan:
Roles (Who is doing what)
Key deliverables (e.g. data collection, literature review, analysis, report
draft, presentation deck)
Milestones/deadlines
