Question 21 Not yet graded / 25 Points Compare & contrast Sigmund Freud's theory about the origin of religions with William James's theory. How does each of these psychologists view religion (positively or negatively)? Now analyze how the insights of Freud orJames might illuminate one of the religious traditions we have studied so far. How would Freud or James underst& that tradition? Use specific examples to support your answer (e.g., a specific belief or ritual). Your Answer: professor, Sigmund Freud’s theory on the origin of religions shows a negative view on religion. Freud theorized that our belief in God comes from impressions made upon us as children by our parents (Molly, 2012, p. 11). For Freud, human behavior & mental states were mainly the result of the workings of the mind in each individual person - especially the ongoing, lifelong struggle between the ego, the super-ego & the id, as each person grows & matures. Freud believe that religion is a psychological disease, caused by the infantile need for a strong father figure to regulate the infantile urges of the id. People with more intense religious feelings suffered this unresolved tension more strongly in childhood; people whose ego was able to regulate their id more easily had less religious tendencies. Freud thinks God does not "really" exists. It is the product of human psychopathology. he thinks our parents tend to project their image of God upon us that was instilled in them by their parents. Freud also argued that the major function of religion is to control human beings & give them a feeling that they are secure & safe. William James on the other h& view religion as a positive way of fulfilling our needs & he praised religions positive influence on the life of the individuals (Molly, 2012, p. 11). James was one of the leading proponents of the school of functionalism in psychology, & pragmatism in philosophy. Hence, his views on religion reflect these inclinations. For James, it is not important whether religion is true, or not true. Rather, religion is a manifestation of an urge towards spiritual belief which is part of human life. The human mind has a tendency towards religious (or spiritual) thought, by the nature of the human animal. In that sense, there's no use in condemning religion as a general phenomenon (for James), because it is an inevitable part of life (although we could reject specific religious ideas or practices). Religion as freud believe is something put upon us by our parent. the proof is children follow heir parent religion. but we also see people changing their religion once they grow up & this can be explained by james theory life issues & the seek of God can make one appreciate this religion & not the other. religion for james is like practicing the wu wei. it is spontaneous & natural.
