Chem Lab 4
Title: Thermochemistry Purpose: To demonstrate and investigate thermochemical reactions. Procedure: Part I: Acid Base Reaction Determine the changeH of NaOH + HCl → NaCl + H2O • We will use a calorimeter to determine this change (coffee cup size with cardboard lid) Part II: Heat of Combustion of Hydrocarbon Fuel Determine how much heat it takes to raise the temperature of water about 15 degrees C C4H10O3 + 5O2 → 4CO2 + 5H2O HO-CH2-CH2-O- CH2- CH2-OH Fuel value= 6020 cal/gram • Calorie not same as food calorie; food calories are kcal = Calorie (capital C) Data, Calculations, Conclusions: Acid Base Reaction • We must determine what the calorimeter will absorb so we measure 50 mL of water and pour it in calorimeter and use thermometer • Put another 50 mL in 40 degree water for 5 minutes • Pull out warm water and take temperature and take temp of calorimeter water Calorimeter Temp of Water= 22.8 degrees C Warm Water Temp= 38.0 degrees C • Pour warm water into calorimeter water and every 15 seconds we will take temperature reading 0 sec= 22.5 15 sec= 29.6 30 sec= 29.8 45 sec= 29.8 ,,,,,,...................
