Week 2 Video Analysis: Mussolini Benito
This video case study provides viewers with background information on the rise and fall of
Benito Mussolini. It is noted that Mussolini was the pioneer of dictators in the early 20th century
as shown in the video of the Dictators playbook. Contrary to the mockery being made of
Mussolini stating he simply was ruling as a puppet in the shadow of Hitler, he was actually a
discoverer and Hitler molded his reign to be similar to that of Mussolini (Stevenson & Cameron,
2018). Mussolini was successful in the strategically implementing tactics that would enable him
to seize power by undermining judges and indoctrinating children. In addition to these tactics,
the ideology of fascism which is founded on violence is what eventually led Europe into a period
of disarray and turmoil.
His childhood was one that was rooted in violence from a very young age from events
ranging from stabbing another student at school and getting expelled to becoming a frequent
flyer in prison. Surprisingly enough he still managed to land a role in the government and used
his troubled past to fuel the hatred he had for his country as a result of his poor upbringings.
While he may have been a troublemaker, he also had exceptional literally skills which helped
him motivate others and create a movement of fear, control, and violence which he believed
would fix the broken class system in Italy. Popolo D’Italia was the newspaper publication that
launched his social platform and gathered the Italian people to assist in quest to seize power over
the people (Hibbert & Foot, 2020). The word begins to spread like wildfire and before he and his
supporters knew it, people started to believe in Mussolini’s trickery and thought that by
abandoning democracy and adopting fascism their people would be brought out of the crisis and
desperation they faced. Mussolini portrayed himself as the Messiah delivered to solve all the
problems and by this, he was also able to gather the support of the common folk as well as the
