Introduction
The United States is projected to experience an increase in shortage of Registered Nurses
(RN’s) that is expected to intensify, especially as Baby Boomers age and the need for healthcare
services expand. In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Employment Projections RN
are listed among the top jobs in terms of job growth through 2026. The RN personnel is expected
to expand from “2.9 million” to “3.4 million” in 2026, which is a significant “15%”. In addition,
the Bureau projects a significant increase in RN each year through 2026 to fill newly created
positions and to replace retiring nurses (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2020).
Presently, healthcare organizations are faced with the increasing barrier of RN shortage with an
optimal nurse to patient ratio becoming a national challenge. Finding the correct ratio without
addressing acuity should not be overlooked. Thus, serious managerial issue of shortage of RN’s
needs to be addressed because it is hurting the profitability of hospitals as the pay more for every
nurse they hire. In addition, per the American Nurses Association adequate staffing levels have
shown reduced medial and medication errors, decrease patient complications, decrease mortality,
improved patient satisfaction and improve nurse retention and job satisfaction just to name a few
(Shimp, 2017). As a result, hospital administrators are tasked with addressing this barrier in
union with stakeholders while ensuring that internal and external legislative is being meet, then
in order to create change organizational and strategical process will be discussed with the goal to
propose a plan to address the barrier of RN shortage.
Resources & Stakeholders
In any plan, resources and stakeholders are a critical to the planning phase. In regard to
increasing nursing shortages in healthcare care, there are several stakeholders involved. First,
