Force acting on a body can change its state of motion or of rest.
A force can make a stationary object move – When you kick a stationary football, it
moves.
A force can stop a moving object – A fielder catches a moving cricket ball to stop its
motion.
A force can increase the speed of a moving object – When a force is applied on a
moving object in the direction of motion, its speed increases.
A force can decrease the speed of a moving object – When a force is applied on a
moving object in the direction opposite to the direction of motion, its speed
decreases.
Force can change the direction of motion of a moving object.
Force can change the shape and size of an object.
Thus, we can say that force acting on a body is a push, pull or a squeeze.
WHAT IS FORCE :
Force is a push or pulls which changes or tends to change the state of rest or of uniform
motion, direction of motion, or shape and size of a body.
Force is a vector quantity because it has both magnitude as well as a direction.
Unit of force: The SI unit of force is Newton.
HOW IS A FORCE REPRESENTED
GRAPHICALLY:
A vector quantity is represented by an arrow: the length of the arrow
direction of the quantity. So, a force is represented by an arrow: the
length of the arrow represents the magnitude and the head of the
arrow represents the direction of the force.
What is meant by the point of
application of force:
