P1 Explain the concept of EQUALITY, DIVERSITY, RIGHTS in relation to health
and social care.
In this task we there will be an understanding of the concept of equality, diversity and
rights in relation to health and social care which will be explained and discussed, the
benefits to the society and how they are implemented in health and social care to
ensure equality and diversity and also to ensure everyone has the same equal
treatment, rights and opportunities in any health and social care settings and also
how it benefits service users in health and social care settings and more importantly
how service users and service givers should be treated equally irrespective of their
gender, race etc anything that poses as a difference.
EQUALITY
Is the ability to give service users in a health and social care setting equal treatment
according to their various needs, irrespective of their social status or anything that
might prove as a difference.
In a health and social care setting, there are laws put in place to eradicate any form
of unequal treatment like the EQUALITY ACT 2010 “which protects those
receiving care and the workers from being treated unfairly because of their
characteristics or differences and there are protected under the legislation
“sourced from (SCIE,2013), this act ensures no one is discriminated against and
legal actions will also be taken if service users and givers are not given equal rights
in a health and social care setting.
For example, an individual who is on a wheelchair should be treated according to
their needs as like there should be ramps around to make them easily accessible to
anywhere and there should be no discrimination against them, in some situations
some public places do have ramps that can enable people with wheelchairs to
access. In this scenario there is no equality as individuals with wheelchairs cannot
access the public place, to provide solutions to this, the public place must make sure
ramps are available to enable easy access for people with wheelchairs. If those are
carried out, there is no equality in such a scenario. Another example is a person who
has difficulty in hearing in a health and social care setting, the individual should have
a translator or a person who is literate in sign language to communicate her feelings

through sign language to make sure the service user in the health care setting is met
up to and the service user is not being discriminated against.
DIVERSITY
Diversity is the process of accepting and respecting our differences as humans in
society. It means appreciating the differences between peoples values, culture and
treating their lifestyles with respect
Examples of things that different individuals in the society include race, education,
opportunities, religion, sex but irrespective of all these, individuals should also learn
to respect each other’s differences.
There are laws and regulation that promote diversity in health and social care setting
one of which include Race Relation (Amendment)Act 2000 “it states that there
should be racial equality and no one is discriminated against on the idea of
their race, it also ensures that in an organisation there is always good
relationship and communication among people of different ethnic
backgrounds” sourced from (NUS,2008).
It basically ensures that there is a good relationship in any organisation or a health
and social care setting among people of different races and there is no unlawful
discrimination on people based on their race
For example in a health care setting an individual who is a Muslim can only eat halal
foods so in the health care they will learn to respect that and will only give the
individual halal foods while also respecting his religion and choices. Another
example is Muslims praying five times daily. Individuals in the health care setting
should respect their religious values and give them their needs as they wish. Another
example is respecting individual sexualities either homosexual, heterosexual,
bisexual or transgender in a health and social care setting.

Are legal entitlement, something you are entitled to because you are human.
