P4 provides an explanation of how national initiatives promote
anti-discriminatory practice

Anti-discriminatory practices can be defined as the core of social work values, it is an
approach that is implemented to help reduce and eliminate discrimination and
oppression and also remove barriers that prevent people from accessing any
services, and make sure there are treated equally.

The legislation is a very important instrument of government, which the government
is used in organising society and protecting citizens of the country.

Examples of legislation in health and social care;

Human rights act 1998
This Act ensures that all individuals have rights on their side and can take legal
action against anyone or organisation that disrespects their human rights.
The human rights act 1998 ensures all fundamental rights and freedoms that
everyone in the UK is entitled to. The Human Rights Act came into force in the UK in
October 2000.
The Human Rights Act 1998 promotes Anti-discriminatory practices because it
covers all human rights and ensures that individuals have rights and makes sure that
these rights are met.
It also makes sure that if rights are not met then legal actions should be taken.
For example, in a nursing home, if an individual feels like their rights are not being
met and they are able to make this known, the individual can take necessary legal
action against the nursing home.

Race relations {amendment) Act 2000
It promotes racial equality and ensures that no individual is discriminated against on
the grounds of their race, it promotes good relations between people of different
ethnic backgrounds. The law makes sure all institutions;
● Eradicate unlawful discrimination
● To Promote equality of opportunities for all races.
● To promote good race relations between persons of different racial groups.
Some of Their duties are;
● Making sure there is a racial equality policy
● Monitoring the admission and progress of students in diverse groups, and
Staff recruitment process and career development by racial group.
● Checking the influence of all Organisational policies for their impact on
different racial groups.
● Publishing the results of monitoring and development on race equality, as well
as race equality policy itself.

Code of practice is a set of written rules that explains how people that work in a
particular profession should behave.
Examples of code of practice in health and social care include;

The nursing and midwifery council code of professional conduct
It is a code of practice that states all the professional standards that nurses,
midwives and nursing associates must abide by in order to be registered to practice
in the UK.
The people in your care must be able to trust you with their health and wellbeing,
To make sure of that you must;
● Making sure the care of people is your first concern, treating them as
individuals and respecting their dignity.
● Work with others to protect and promote the health and wellbeing of those in
your care, their families and carers, and the wider community.
● Provide a high standard of practice and care at all times
● Be open and honest, act and uphold the reputation of your profession,
You must always act and abide by laws, whether those laws relating to your
professional practice or personal life...
The nursing and midwifery code promotes anti-discriminatory practices as it
includes rules and regulations that must be followed by all nurses and
midwives to give all acceptable levels of care and avoid discrimination, An
example of this is the section of the code that explains that all nurses and
midwives must be able to trust an individual in care and to gain their trust the
section suggests actions that support anti-discriminatory practices, this
includes treating a person an individual with respect and dignity, acting with
integrity and acting as part of a diverse team, with the aim of eliminating
discrimination as it explains each with a solution to prevent or overcome
discrimination

GENERAL SOCIAL CARE COUNCIL
The general social care council registers social care workers and supervise
their conduct and training.people working in social care need codes of
practice and are judged on them when they are officially inspected, the code
also tells those using the service what to expect, and if they are not treated
accordingly they have a right to complain, as a professional working in health
and social care you need to be aware of the codes and practice and charters
and ensure they are given training about them,
The codes apply to
● General social care council in England
● Care council for wales
