PSY101: Introduction to Psychology
First, give examples of at least three qualities associated with utilizing your academic voice.
One quality of using one’s academic voice consists of making declarative statements. An
example of a declarative statement would be asking a question, making a command, or
expressing an emotion. It’s vital though that one avoids any casual language such as any
language you would use when conversing with a friend. There are numerous perks to having
your own academic voice. These qualities range from uniqueness, creativity and dignity.
When you use your own academic voice, you know that your work is unique to you and you
only. If using other sources, it is crucial that you are properly citing the work and giving credit
to where you’re obtaining the information. You can still make your own argument, share your
own opinions, and have a say when it’s your work, but it’s a must that any outside sources are
properly cited and mentioned in the references. When you enable yourself to write in ways you
haven’t before or to even switch up your style of writing, it opens up a lot of creativity and
uniqueness. What I personally enjoy doing is utilizing different writing styles when I’m doing
a work of my own. Whether it be persuasive, narrative, descriptive, or any other type of
writing. Now depending on what you are writing about, your writing style may vary regardless
and you may have to switch it up based on what the writing requires.
Next, relate at least three strategies for utilizing your own academic voice in discussions
and/or assignments. What can you do right now to help you avoid accidental plagiarism?
There are strategies for utilizing your own academic voice in discussions and assignments
such as explaining facts in simple terms that others will be able to understand. It’s also best to
avoid any slang and to remain professional when using words. The words need to relate to the
subject at hand and they need to be precise so there’s a clear understanding of what’s being
said. Word choice and tone also need to match the listening audience that way the words or
purpose of the writing doesn’t go over the heads of the audience. For example, an academic
targeted writing is going to be formatted differently and the words used are going to match
more of an academic standard than a writing shared with a general audience outside of an
academic setting.
When it comes to avoiding plagiarism, it takes knowing the consequences of plagiarizing
someone else’s work without giving the author full credit for the things you are using in your
paper. You may not only fail the assignment, but also be dropped from the class and possibly
booted from school for plagiarizing and academic dishonesty. To avoid plagiarism, it is best to
correctly paraphrase any information obtained from an outside source, avoid purchasing written
material and using it as your own, utilize Turnitin, and not reuse assignments from a previous
course without the instructor’s permission (Plagiarism Guide, 2021). When in doubt, it is best
to cite the information and give credit to where it is due.
