PSY101: Introduction to Psychology
Having your own academic voice is crucial if you want to be successful throughout your
academic career. It's not like talking to a friend or writing on the web, but more so about
meeting the expectations of writing at an academic level. The three qualities associated with
having an academic voice include avoiding casual language, using evidence to support the
information provided, and including your own ideas and analysis (Academic Voice | UAGC
Writing Center,
2021). Avoiding casual language is key when utilizing your academic voice because writing at
a university level requires one to write professionally. This means removing any casual or foul
language that would be used when talking to friends, as well as any other informal writing such
as storytelling indicators or the use of multiple contractions. This gives students an opportunity
to show some dignity in the academic work that they do and show professionalism. In addition
to that, it is necessary that there's sufficient evidence to support the information that's being
shared within the writing. This not only shows credibility, but also that the proper amount of
research
has been completed to cover all the main points of what's being written. It’s important to note
that the sources used aren't just websites you'd find on Google, but rather, scholarly and peer-
reviewed articles that allows the reader to believe and understand the information that's being
provided. With that being said, adding your own ideas and analysis in addition to providing
sufficient evidence is a great way to show creativity because it shows the audience that there's
been sufficient research done to have enough expertise to share personal ideas on the topic.
