Mechanical digestion starts in the oral cavity (mouth) with food being chewed. Then, chemical digestion
begins with the enzyme amylase in saliva breaking down carbohydrates.

To process nutrients absorbed in the small intestine. Bile from the liver secreted into the small intestine
also plays a role in digesting fat and some vitamins.
”3. What role does the gallbladder play in digestion? ”
The gallbladder holds bile until the liver needs it.
”4. Why is the orientation of the muscle of the stomach wall important? How does this contribute to its
function? ”
It needs to churn the food in order to break it down properly. It keeps the chyme moving from all
directions
