CONTRIBUTORS OF STYLISTICS DEVICES IN LINGUISTICS
Student’s Name Professor’s Name Course Title Date a. Hassan Halliday Hassan Halliday a professor of linguistics made significant contribution into stylistics devices. Through her interest in language and verbal art she researched on language and the distribution of forms of consciousness, and she managed to show how language is a social semiotic. She explored the connection between language and culture, learning and social class. She went to divide linguistics externalist and internalist theories. In the externalist theory, she classified it as language that is used for subsidiary role, whereby language is not the main factor that expresses existence of things, meaning that language is just a naming device. She also introduced linguist context which is a semiotic construct through three stylistic devices that include, field, tone and mode. In verbal art linguistics, she introduced foregrounding which is a contrast with respect to the norms of the text. She argues that syntax is an important part of a story. b. Geoffrey Leech The professor wrote two stylistic works, A Linguistic Guide to English Poetry and Style in Fiction. The two works focus of foregrounding which he defines as the psychological prominence of artistic effects in literature. Through foregrounding in poetry is unexpected irregularities in the take form therefore creating a deviation. He came with different forms of deviation which include; primary, secondary and tertiary deviations. He defined primary deviation as deviation against the background of general linguistic norms, secondary deviation as deviation against the norms of conventional poetic regularity, and tertiary deviation as deviation against norms established within a literary text. c. Roger Fowler Roger Fowler showed interest in creating a link between literature and language. Through the book, The Language of Poets, he showed contribution in stylistic devices. One of his most significant stylistic devices is Focalization. Through focalization the text foregrounds words of estrangement denoting speculation where a reader makes assumptions of things in a story. Transformational syntax was also a good contribution as Fowler explores the importance of syntax in describing the behavior of man through literal texts. Show Less
