Effective Communication in Healthcare
Introduction
Communication plays a vital role in healthcare facilities, especially in delivery of care to
patients. Nurses and other health professionals have to communicate effectively to ensure that
medical errors that may arise during handoffs and other operations are greatly minimized. The
delivery of quality care to patients is mostly dependent on effective communication. Notably,
poor communication is the major cause of unanticipated occurrences in healthcare facilities,
which have in one way or another resulted in deaths or serious injuries (Weiss et al., 2019).
According to the Joint Commission ineffective communication is substantial cause of sentinel
events in healthcare organizations and that there is a dire need to develop certain mechanisms to
address it as it greatly affects patient safety and quality of care. It is vital to acknowledge that
communication in the healthcare organization I work for communication occurs at various levels
and it involves providing information among other activities. For communication to be effective,
there is a dire need for active listening, which would ensure that the listener understands all the
levels of meaning in a particular communication. The paper discusses in detail the role of
communication in healthcare facilities with regard to certain aspects such as interpersonal
communication.
