Catalog Description:
The focus of this course is to gain an international perspective of health care issues. Through small
group work, students will compare health related values, beliefs, and practices in selected countries
outside the United States with health-related values, beliefs, and practices within the United States.
Incorporating this knowledge, students will then develop appropriate professional interventions for
a specific sub-cultural group.

This course format consistently meets the same quality, assessment, learning outcomes and
requirements of the traditional semester offering of this course.

Course Content:
1. Transcultural theory/models(s) (e.g., Giger & Davidhizar’s elements of communication, time,
space, social organization, environmental control, and biological variations)
2. Ethnography/Ethnographic interview process
3. Cultural considerations related to health education and literacy

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
1. Describe health-related economic, political, social, gerontological, genomic, and cultural issues
for a minimum of 2 sub-cultural groups in the United States (1) and internationally (1). (CSLOs
4, 7, 11)
2. Compare differences and similarities of health -related values, beliefs, and practices of sub-
cultural groups. (CSLO 4)
3. Analyze personal cultural values and practices as related to health, health care, and illness.
(CSLOs 3, 12)
4. Apply transcultural theory in the care of clients in health care relationships. (CSLO 4)
5. Develop a culturally congruent professional intervention for one sub-cultural group. (CSLOs 4,
5)
6. Access international/cultural information through accepted Internet sources. (CSLOs 1, 6)

 Author. (2009). Concise rules of APA style (7th ed.). Washington, DC: American
Psychological Association (or current edition).
 Note: Students starting the RN to BSN program in Spring 2020, need to utilize the APA
Manual 7th edition. Students PRIOR to Spring 2020 may continue to utilize the APA
Manual 6th edition

Grading Scale:
A = 94-100% C = 74-76%
A- = 90-93% C- = 70-73%
B+ = 87-89% D+ = 67-69%
B = 84-86% D = 64-66%
B- = 80-83% D- = 60-63%
C+ = 77-79% F = <60%

Each student must attain a minimum grade of “C” (74%) as a final grade in each nursing course to
progress in the nursing program.
