RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
primary functions:
- supplies blood with oxygen so that the blood can deliver
oxygen to all parts of the body
- removes carbon dioxide waste that cells produce
Respiration
– overall exchange of gases
– 4 Phases:
1. Breathing - taking air out of the body
2. External respiratory - exchange of oxygen & CO2 between the air
and blood within the lungs
3. Internal respiratory - exchange of oxygen and CO2 between blood
and body cells
4. Cellular respiration - using oxygen to break down sugar in food
Organs
• nose • larynx • bronchi
• pharynx • trachea • lungs
nose
– only visible part
– where air passes through (nostrils)
– the tiny hair inside the nose is called cilia
blocks dirt from entering the body
it has mucous membrane that secretes sticky fluid
pharynx
– throat
– passageway for air and food
larynx
– also known as “voice box”
– where vocal cords are located
trachea
