The Selection

I chose this book, because I read the book in Dutch and i really liked it. I didn’t know what to
choose so I decided to read the book in English.
The story is a little bit Fantasy but also a little bit true life
The theme
I think the theme of the Selection is love, because it is about a girl who is in love with a guy.
Later she has to compete the Selection to be the wife and queen of Illéa. She thought the
prince was stupid and arrogant, but when she was at the palace she saw the opposite. She
fell in love with the prince. That’s kind of the story, but it is also in the future. I know that,
because there was already a third war and America wasn’t America anymore. They were
calling it Illéa. I think the writer wanted to tell people that you can’t judge people of anything if
you haven’t met them yet. Maybe you think they are stupid and boring but you just saw the
person and when you are going to speak with him. He is kind and sweet.
The setting
The story happened in the future. The third war happened already and the country doesn’t
have the same name anymore. The story happened in Illéa. Illéa is America, but in the
future. They tell about the girl how she is going through it. You can read the thoughts of her
and everything what is happening.
the plot
America singer lives in a world with 8 castes depending on one’s social and economic status.
Ones are the most wealthiest and desirable, with eights being the lowest and poorest.
America Singer is a five, which consists of the entertainers. Prince Maxon Schreave will be
holding the selection. The selection is a competition for the prince’s hand and the crown for a
princess. America has no interest in entering the selection because she has been secretly
dating Aspen. Aspen is a six. He urges America to accept the opportunity at a better life
because if she wants to marry Aspen she will be a six too. That means less food and money.
Her mother later bribes her into the selection by offering to let her keep half of what she
earns at her job. Later that night, America brings food to Aspen and he gets upset. He
doesn’t want that America is going to be the ‘ victim’. America chose for the selection, but
without Aspen because he broke up. She is going to compete with 34 other girls for the
prince’s heart. On the way to the palace she meets some of her competitors. Especially
Marlee, who will later become her best friend. There is also Celeste. She is rich ( high caste)
and very arrogant. When they were in the palace and it was evening. America was getting
unwell, so she wanted to go outside, but you were not allowed to leave the palace even if
you wanted to be in the garden. Than Maxon came and said to the guards that they could let
her out. America was in tears and shouted at the prince, calling him shallow. At the first
meeting America don’t likes Maxon, but as the story progresses, they are having a
friendship. America begs Maxon to let her stay because than her parents will get money.
Eventually, America realizes that she really likes Maxon. On the balcony is the first kiss and
also Maxon’s first kiss. At the time they are in the palace there were 2 attacks from rebels.
Than Aspen starts working in the palace as a guard: officer leger. America gets confused
and doesn’t know what to do. But one of the rules of the selection is that having a romantic
relationship with someone else is considered treason, with the punishment being death.
