Service Plan Brief for the Establishment of a Wellness Centers to Provide Coaching and Physical and Mental Services March 6, 2021 Beth Gaby-Smith, RN Western Governors University PAGE 1 AYM1 SERVICE PLAN BRIEF Service Plan Brief for Establishment of Wellness Centers to Provide Coaching and Physical and Mental Services Service Idea A.1. Healthy living has always been difficult in this busy world but never more difficult than in the past year. The physical and mental challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic have impacted everyone in society. According to Mindbody’s 2021 Wellness Index, seventyeight percent of Americans say that wellness is now more important than ever (Starr, n.d.). High levels of stress from routine daily life escalated during this time of quarantine. Isolation, fear, and uncertainty caused a surge in suicide rates, crime, obesity, and personal and interpersonal relationships suffered. Finding ways to maintain health and wellness while navigating this new reality has become a priority for healthcare. The Global Institute of Wellness defines wellness as the active pursuit of activities, choices, and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health. Wellness is not static and it extends beyond physical health to incorporate many dimensions that should work in harmony (What Is Wellness?, n.d.). Enabling people to make healthy choices and positive lifestyle changes will lead them to wellness. In order to live a healthy, fulfilled life, one must take care of physical and mental needs. In Bloomberg’s list of the World’s Healthiest Nations, the United States is 35th (Miller & Lu, 2019), proving that more emphasis has to be placed on health here. This often requires learning new skills and behaviors. Embracing the concept of wellness and incorporating these positive changes can be challenging. Employers need to encourage and promote these new habits by utilizing wellness programs. Wellness programs lower health care costs, reduce absenteeism, reduce workplace injuries, and improve employee morale and loyalty. Employees that have PAGE 2 AYM1 SERVICE PLAN BRIEF access to a wellness program show improvement in many areas of health, including in their productivity at work (Aldana, 2020). A study by United Healthcare showed that the main employee wellness needs during the current pandemic are improvement in sleep, stress reduction, and help managing chronic conditions. Basic behaviors like activity level and eating habits have been affected by the Coronavirus outbreak (Waddill, 2020) Even before COVID, the mental health situation was grim. Globally, more than 15% of people have substance abuse disorders or diagnosed mental health issues. This has been estimated to cost the global economy 16 trillion dollars by 2030 (McGroarty, 2021). These factors emphasize the critical importance of both physical and mental health. There is an essential need for wellness centers that provide coaching and resources to teach these skills. The necessity for wellness applies to people of all ages, races, and sex. Therefore, the proposed project is the establishment of a wellness center that provides these services. A successful wellness center will play a vital role in equipping people with the life skills necessary for healthy living and will provide them with the tools to overcome the various challenges of living in this high-stress society. A.2. The community benefits of a wellness center are many. These include the improvement of health behaviors, reduction in health risks, and reduction in healthcare costs. For employers, the benefits most often seen are increased productivity, reduced absenteeism, higher job satisfaction, and improved retention (Aldana, 2020). Positive behavior changes can impact all areas of life, from personal to social to professional, while also increasing longevity of life. As mentioned above, the target population that will benefit from these life improvements encompasses all members of the community, regardless of age, race, or sex. In addition to th
