The Adverse Image of Women in D.H Lawrence Short Stories
D. H Lawrence is known to be one of the most important writers in the twentieth century.
His themes focusing on materialism, sexual desires and other societal themes made him
prominent in the field of literature. These themes also made him controversial because of the
conventions he utilized. In total, D. H Lawrence made a huge number of literary works such as
novel, plays and short stories which are published around the globe.
One of the short stories he wrote is “The Woman who Rode Away” which features an
unnamed woman who leaves her husband and two children to look for Chilchui Indians
apparently to take a look on their houses and discover their gods. Her desire for a thrilling
adventure placed her in a disastrous situation. During her trip, she met an Indian who belongs to
the place she was looking for. The man led her to their village where she became a prisoner just
because she is a white person. In the end, with her permission, the villagers sacrifice her with
the belief that she will be the key for the sun to return in their place. The story ended when an
old man was about to strike her.

emphasizes Paul whose lack of love from his materialistic mother resulted to his search for luck.
His wooden horse which is a gift he received last Christmas made him foreseen the winning
horse. Through it, he gets a lot of money by betting in the derby. Unfortunately, the wooden
horse which helps him foreseen the winning horse also leads him to his death.
In this story, the mother made a big part on how Paul ended his life immediately. Hester,
the mother is too busy to care of herself and have her luxurious wants in life that she forgets
that she has children. She doesn’t even give them enough affection making them lonely in life.
