1- How can a teacher deal with cultural differences in adolescent class 4 marks
Ans-
According to a researcher Tan, there are three main ways in which a teacher can deal with
cultural differences.
Assimilation or Anglo approach: this is where all students of different cultures are expected
to leave behind their native culture within the classroom. This is where they adopt a new
culture which is the American culture of life. This helps to bring uniformity and homogeneity
in class. It also makes learning from a particular perspective -the American perspective-
easier.
Amalgamation: in this approach certain elements or characteristics of each culture present in
the classroom are acknowledged and put together in order to form a completely new and
unique culture which has not existed before. This give some representation to students of
each cultures and also enables to achieve some equality in the classroom.
Cultural pluralism: with this approach all cultures are fully taken into account and each
student retains their complete cultural identity. The teacher is mindful of all cultures and
remains very careful throughout her interaction with the students. This co-existence of
cultures demands an environment of respect, tolerance and awareness.
Teachers of adolescent students can adopt any approach that appears most feasible according
to the numbers of different cultures, country they are living in and agreeableness of students
and the teacher. However, it seems logical to stick to the cultural pluralism approach because
otherwise an adolescent tends to very easily rebel or question adopting another culture. In
adopting another culture they might also lose their native culture and enjoy the assimilated or
amalgamated one more which could create problems at home. Apart from this, the cultural
pluralism approach will also enable students to accept different cultures in the outside world.
The teacher though must be very careful. He/she should first educate themselves about all the
cultures present in the classroom. The teacher should try not to bring up religion during the
lesson and use neutral sentences like, "Pray to who you believe is your God and ask him for
help". The teacher should celebrate each cultural day and also have a day designated for
students to bring their cultural foods or where they cultural dresses in order to spread
awareness and tolerance.
