, IMPACT OF COVID-19 AND ROLE OF MEDIA
The COVID'19 is a viral pandemic that has spread in around 200 countries across the globe.
It began from China and then extended to other countries through the air and contact of skin
with any other object. Pakistan has also experienced the same and the first cases it reported
were in the month of March, in the Baluchistan province. The pandemic is still present and
governments in all countries have announced lockdowns where all non essential businesses
have closed down in order to maintain social distancing. Pakistan has faced such a situation
after a hundred years. The last time a similar pandemic was experienced was at the of the
Spanish flu and that too was a hard time for people. However this time it is way worse. This
paper identifies how pandemic is so severe for Pakistan. It makes mention of the ongoing
impact to the economy, education, employment, gender, culture, age and how different
people have reacted to it. It also states the different coping strategies that have been used
during this time along with my own strategies to cope with it. In the end there is a brief on
long term possible outcomes along with how people can improve their reactions towards the
virus. All discussions have been briefly related to the role of media.
Impacts
COVID-19 has impacted different sectors of Pakistan, namely education and employment
which has resulted in extending the impact to the overall economy.
Education
With the closing of educational sectors, some schools and universities begun online classes
which have been unsuccessful. Other institutions have not had facilities to introduce online
classes so students all over are suffering. In terms of gender, it has had a greater impact on
the education of girls compared to boys. Girls are finding a hard time to manage online
classes because of the load of domestic chores with all members being at home (Gendered
impact and implications of COVID-19 in Pakistan, 2020). The media has made no mention of
the extra load that girls have to bear.
Employment
Within the employment sector, the sectors that have faced most losses are small scale farmers
or agriculture, the services sector and small businesses. Employees from all these fields
