Genomics and Genetics Paper
The following paper is concerned with genomics and genetic application for the nursing
field. It is important for nurses to understand that this science is applicable and is an integral part
of health and illness. The American Nurses Association (ANA) definition of genomics is the
study of the human genome and interactions with genes and the effect it has on a patient’s overall
health also incorporating environmental components. The ANA also defines genetics as the
study of genes and the part played in genetic disorders (ANA, 2009).
The ANA (2009) further reiterates that public expectation is such that Registered Nurses

must have a fundamental understanding of genetics and genomics and have the ability to educate

patients, their families as well as incorporating this information into nursing curricula to benefit
o.
nursing students; this directly applies to this author as a nurse educator. It is important that each

ou urc
nurse has minimal competency in this area, recognizes self-biases as well as also respects the
boundaries and decisions of their patients and families. Nurses have the responsibility to
o
aC s
maintain competency in genetics and genomics areas and must work toward not only meeting the
vi y re
competencies but gaining needed knowledge through the use of research and technology.
Healthcare professionals must promote research to validate peer reviewed evidence based care
ed d
ar stu
and promote appropriate resources for patients through validation of these findings. This
includes encouraging the general public to seek appropriate genomic and genetic advice and
is
assist in location of referrals and resources.

Competencies for Professional Nurses
The process of developing competencies for genomics and genetics for nurses was

initiated and approved by governmental, educational, and state nursing leaders with
