Definition, classification, air, water, solid waste, thermal, noise and radioactive pollutions.
Different parameter of pollution
i) Water POLLUTION: Sources , transport of pollutants, effect of water pollutants on man,
animal ,plants material, various types of pollutants. Mainly discuss various types of wastes from
community, domestic & industrial wastes and their affects on environment, Indian Standards for
quality of drinking water, Indian Standards for quality of treated waste water. Treatment methods
of effluent (domestic waste water and industrial/ mining waste water), its reuse/safe disposal.
ii)AIR POLLUTION :Definition of Air pollution, types of air pollutants, causes and its effects on
the environment Monitoring and control of air pollutants, Ambient air quality measurement and
their standards. Effects of mining, blasting and deforestation, Vehicular Pollution and Its control
with special emphasis of Euro-I, Euro-II, Euro-III and Euro IV.
iii) NOISE POLLUTION : Sources, measurement of pollution. Degree of noise. Echos and their
control. Industrial noise, units characteristics occupational injuries due to noise, criteria and
standard for occupational injuries due to noise. Means to control noise in industry.
iv)RADIOACTIVE POLLUTION: Sources and its effect on human, animal, plant and material,
means to control and preventive measures.
v)SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT :Review of various types of solid waste. sources,
components of solid waste, city garbage and industrial solid waste handling and disposal
equipment . Method of disposal, salvage and recovery. Volume reduction in solid waste.
