AIS1501 ASSIGNMENT NO: 01 2021. Introducing Applied Information Science. Information science Information science is that discipline that investigates the properties and behavior of information, the forces governing the flow of information, and the means of processing information for optimum accessibility and usability. It is concerned with that body of knowledge relating to the origination, collection, organization, storage, retrieval, interpretation, transmission, transformation, and utilization of information. This includes the investigation of information representations in both natural and artificial systems, the use of codes for efficient message transmission, and the study of information processing devices and techniques such as computers and their programming systems. (Borko,1968, p.3). Information science also incorporates aspects of diverse fields such as archival science, cognitive science, commerce, law, linguistics, museology, management, mathematics, philosophy, public policy, and social sciences. It is concerned with recordable information and knowledge, and the technologies and related services that facilitate their management and use. More specifically, information science is a field of professional practice and scientific inquiry addressing the effective communication of information and information objects, particularly knowledge records, among humans in the context of social, organizational, and individual need for and use of information (Saracevic, 2009). 1.2 Information Technology Information technology includes the hardware and software used to capture, store, retrieve process, and transmit data. For information and knowledge management activities to take place in an organisation may require the support of a technical infrastructure, that is, information technology. It can also be referred to as the means to reduce overload and minimise distortion. One of the main roles of information technology in information and knowledge management, therefore, is to accelerate the speed of information knowledge creation, storage and distribution. Cascio (2001:15) states that technology facilitates the rapid diffusion of information and knowledge. Information technology intends to help the process of collecting and organizing the knowledge of groups of individuals in order to make this knowledge available in a shared base. Information technology may, if well-resourced and implemented, provide a comprehensive knowledge base that is speedily accessed, interactive, and of immediate value to the user. 2 AIS1501 ASSIGNMENT NO: 01 UNIQUE NUMBER: STUDENT NUMBER: 1.3 Cataloguing and Classification Cataloging is an essential process in any library or information center in order to provide information access to all learning resources to library patrons. Cataloging is very important in keeping all the materials in the library organized because it provides regularity within the library. This role of cataloging gives a vivid picture how important a catalog is in the society or community. The library, through the technical services provided by library and information services practitioners can deliver the most efficient and highest quality service so that library users may identify and retrieve appropriate materials to meet their information needs. Cataloging and classification focuses on the intelligibility of bibliographic records and the findability of material, a cataloging and classification is beneficial to the success of every library function. Classification facilitate access by allowing the user to find out what works or documents the library has on a certain subject and can provide a known location for the information source to be located. 1.4 Teacher librarian Teacher librarian is a generic term for the various names used in schools for teachers who manage the resource collection, for example, librarians, media teachers, resource centre teachers and information specialists (Hoskins, 2007: 61). The teacher-librarian work in the school library full-time to attend to the information needs of educators and learners, and his not allocated to any other teaching commitments in the school. Teacher librarians support and implement the vision of their school communities through advocating and building effective library and information services and programs that contribute to the development of lifelong learners. Teacher librarian promotes the use of the information process as a framework for the development of information skills and as the basis for systematic monitoring of students' development as information users. QUESTION 2 Element of collection development process: The term collection development has been defined variously by different scholars. According to Ameyaw, Florence and Asante (2016) defined Collection Development as the process of making sure that the information needs of the people are met in a timely and economic manner using information resources that have been produced both within and outside the organization. Bitagi (2010) defined collection development as the activities that enhance the assemblage and the 3 AIS1501 ASSIGNMENT NO: 01 UNIQUE NUMBER: STUDENT NUMBER: provision of a variety of information materials to meet the desperate needs of library users. This concept collection development is a crucial department in a given library, it is so important because it is the medium by which the information resources that are stocked in library passes through. Community need assessment Collection development as the term might be, it is a process whereby the library collection is been built up in order to increase the sum total of the collections. In doing this, there are stakeholders that are involved in the process and that has to do with the community the library is established to serve. It is expedient at this junction that the community is been checked to ascertain areas where information resources are lacking so that they can be met. In academic libraries, the stakeholders are: academic staff, students and the librarian. The academic staff, they are the lecturers and they know the necessary books that are needed for effective execution of their job that is the teaching and learning process, the students on the other hand do have contact with their fellow students in other institutions who can get them informed of the current information materials readily available or been used in their field of study. Librarians and the library staff being the final bus stop for this community need assessment is vested with the responsibility of presenting a form requesting the other stakeholders to fill as appropriate and thereafter as professionals in the field of librarianship, they will streamlined the suggested information resources either in book or not book format in accordance to the fund provided for their purchase so that none of the departments will be left out.
