First Activity
a) A dictionary activity, for vocabulary and dictionary skills development AFTER the class have
read or listened to your selected text.
This could be used later in the same lesson or in another lesson. You can use the vocabulary items
you have selected for pre-teaching or make a different selection. The vocabulary must be from the
text or clearly relevant to the text.

b. Exercise 1. Explain that a word or phrase from the text of the speech by
Boris Johnson to the United Nations has been used in each of the
sentences. From the list of words provided choose one that is a suitable

Some of the given words/phrases are synonyms, others opposites and
some bear no relation to the original word.
