INTRODUCTION
I created these notes when preparing for the same exam as you are. I relied on
these notes and I passed with a distinction.
There are some ‘public domain’ documents included in this study aid. As you will
know, ‘public domain’ simply means that the documents are free for anyone and
everyone to use. I take no credit for them.
The mind maps are all mine, and are all original. They evolved from being hand-
drawn (very time-consuming), to being produced by a trial version on mind map
software (which I then purchased), to being produced by the full-blown version of
the software.
You are NOT ALLOWED to distribute this material. It is for YOUR use ONLY.
For convenience it has been packaged into one integrated unit.
This edition does not contain the electronic text book. If you do want the edition
that does, then please contact me. It is legal to own an electronic version for your
own use of a book you have purchased.
You will need the text book for reference and study purposes. This study
aid is intended to supplement it and not replace it.
The material has been extensively cross-referenced, hyperlinked and made
searchable.
This is not intended to replace the tutorial matter and neither is it a replacement for
your Study Guide. This is supplementary, secondary material.
PRESCRIBED TEXT BOOK
Unisa’s Study Guide is based upon Foxcroft and Roodt’s ‘Introduction to
Psychological Assessment’. The references in this material are to the 3rd edition.
Either of the 3rd or 4th editions can be used. I have included a cross-reference
(created by Unisa) between the two editions if you have the 4th edition.
PAST EXAM PAPERS
These are freely available from Unisa, and you should have them all. Studying past
papers is a valuable part of exam preparation and helps to keep revision focused on
important themes whilst practicing exam style questions. Refer to them as they will
give you a feel for the mix of questions – the consolidation I have made deprives
you of this aspect.
, Past exam papers are one of the most helpful tools available to prepare
examinations as they provide us with practical insight into how the forthcoming
exam paper is likely to look, and the key themes or subject areas most likely to be
covered. Before starting revision for a subject it is always worth taking time to
evaluate past papers.
SPOTTING
It is tempting to spot exam questions. It is also very dangerous and this practice is
not advised. Instead of spotting questions, you should spot topics, if you do want
to spot. For example, instead of trying to prepare for this exam by choosing a
question that reads, "The Employment Equity Act (EEA) has had major implications
for the field of psychological assessment. Discuss the consequences of the EEA for
testing and assessment in South Africa.", you should prepare for the topic
"Psychological Assessment in the Democratic South Africa". Also be guided by the
recommendations made by UNISA in their Revision document. For your
convenience, I have created a model answer to the EEA question, using the
Revision guidelines.
That means you should know the why, when, how, what of democracy as it pertains
to psychological testing. This would ensure that should you be asked the question
“The Employment Equity Act (EEA) mentions fairness and bias as part of its
guidelines. Differentiate between these two concepts. Also discuss whether the Act
adequately addresses concerns on the use of psychological assessments tools”, you
would still be able to answer it.
REFERENCE TO PARAGRAPHS IN THE TEXT BOOK
First a disclaimer: the paragraph references for each of the exam questions – all 144
of them – are my own recommendations. I make no guarantee that the reference is
correct, or that it is the only reference. Use your discretion.
Follow the paragraph reference until the next paragraph of equal level and seniority
in the text book. In other words, if the reference is to, say, paragraph 6.1.1, read (or
study) up to 6.1.2 – this means you will include the sub-paragraphs 6.1.1.1, 6.1.1.2,
and 6.1.13 and so on.
ADDITIONAL MATERIAL
I have included a few hyperlinks to YouTube videos. It is highly recommended that
you watch these videos as they will help you with key topics.
TIPS FOR USING THIS DOCUMENT
This is a large document. It contains approximately 160 pages so it can be
cumbersome to get from one place to another. There are three ways to help you to
skip around the text book quite nimbly with a simple click.
