LEGAL PHILOSOPHY_4801 Legal philosophy is unlike most of your other LLB modules. We are not going to be teaching you black-letter law. Black-letter law is what they teach you in modules in private law, mercantile law and so on. Black-letter law consists of knowing the rules, the exceptions, the basic concepts, case law and legislation. As will become clear, that is not what legal philosophy is all about. It is about the big questions behind the rules and precedent and we will discuss these in the rest of the study guide. Because this module is different, you may have heard rumours that it is diffi cult – this is not true. Legal Philosophy is just as manageable as your other law subjects; however, it does test different skills. We will detail these skills further on in this chapter.
