LEARNING UNIT 1 1. Define the following concepts (20) 8 9 1.1 Management (4) Management is the art of optimizing the use of resources, achieving desired goals and organizing processes of a public institution. Educational management is made up of the principal, deputy principal and the department head and is also known as the School Management Team (SMT). A manager is the person responsible for managing the resources and peruse the organizations goal. Managers will organize events, plan the outcome goals and help people reach the ultimate goal of the organization. 1.2 Leadership (4) Leadership is the art of directing and motivating people and their actions to align with the formulated outcomes. Leaders have distinct characteristics and qualities that distinguishes them from others. Leaders are usually purpose- and vision- driven, they also devote themselves to a purpose. They gain loyalty through assistance, motivation and guidance that they give. Leaders provide a guideline for others and is understanding. Leaders are people who help others to achieve their goals efficiently and effectively. 1.3 School Governing Body (4) Legally required board of lay and professional people elected or appointed to govern a school. Structure that is entrusted with responsibility and authority to formulate and adopt policy for each public school in terms of national and provincial laws and regulations prescribed within the national norms and standards. Statutory body of parents, educators, non-teaching staff and learners who seek to work together to promote the well-being and effectiveness of school community and thereby enhancing teaching and learning. 1.4 Diversity (4) The fact of many different types of things and people included n something, a range of different things or people. Condition or fact of being different or varied, diversity is a mixture of races and religions that make up a group of people. Inclusions of individuals representing more than one national region, colour, religion, socioeconomic stratum, sexual orientation etc. Feature of mixed workforce that provides a wide range of abilities, experiences, knowledge and strength due to its heterogeneity in age, background, ethnicity, abilities, political and religious beliefs, sex and other attributes. 1.5 Human Resources (4) The people that staff and operate an organization as contracted with financial and material resources of the organization
