IOP 2601 UNIT 1: INTRODUCTION TO RESEARCH AND STATISTICS WHAT IS RESEARCH? It is a systematic process that involves collecting, answering questions, analysing and interpreting information. Research can also be described as an investigation involving the use of scientific principles such as specific strategies or methods. These are used to gather information to make sure that they are reliable and valid. What is the role of research in Industrial Psychology? Industrial psychologists use psychological principles and research methods to solve problems in the workplace and improve the quality of life. Since research helps to gather information that will assist in answering questions, then knowledge of research will help to interpret and evaluate the work of employees within an organization and equip them with skills to enable problem solving. This will in turn positively influence the optimal functioning of the organization and help to answer questions in a meaningful and scientific manner. Research Process There are five steps: 1. Identify the problem 2. Design the research study 3. Data collection 4. Data analysis 5. Drawing conclusions In the module Iop2601, the main focus is on the data analysis.
