ETH306W Assignment Number 02. ETH306W - Inclusive Education B. Inclusive Education: Does anyone know what the term Inclusive Education is? Well the term Inclusive Education emerged at the World Conference on Special Needs Education in 1994 held in Salamanca, Spain. The reason for this conference was that they thought that every human has a fundamental right to be included into the education system no matter what disability or learning barriers the learners may have. Another reason why the current system in South Africa needed to be addressed was because of the apartheid era, where learners of various races were excluded from schools of other races and given separate but vastly unequal education. During this era there was also separation of learners with special needs and disabilities. In the wealthier areas separate special needs schools were set up and in the poorer rural areas these facilities were lacking and the children often stayed at home. This is one of the reasons why the Education White Paper 6 was introduced to address these problems. As most of you are probably aware inclusive education: 1. Accommodates all learners regardless of their physical, intellectual, social, emotional, linguistic or other conditions. This includes learners that are gifted and disabled, street and working learners, learners from rural or remote areas, learners from linguistic, ethnic, or cultural minorities and learners from other disadvantaged or marginalised areas or groups. If this sounds familiar to you it is because I have quoted from the Salamanca Statement and Framework for Action on Special Needs Education. Paris: UNESCO:1994. Intrinsic Factors causing Barriers to learning and development: Intrinsic factors causing barriers to learning are those factors which learners are born with or have acquired later such as physical/physiological impairments which cause barriers to learning and development. These are not due to the environment or education factors. For example, learners that are blind or hard of hearing, or have epilepsy. Thus intrinsic barriers are those which are located within the learner. Extrinsic Factors causing Barriers to learning and development: Extrinsic Factors causing barriers to learning and development are from outside factors that impact on the development and behaviour of the learner due to the environment they live in. For example, inadequate environmental influences, poor education and a system of education that does not provide for a diversity of learners. Intrinsic and Extrinsic Factors causing Barriers to learning and development: Many learners may experience both intrinsic and extrinsic factors that may result in barriers to learning. For example a learner may be born hard of hearing and may suffer malnutrition due to poverty which may impact further on the learners’ ability to learn and develop. Student Number: Unique N
