Three possible catabolic fates of the Pyruvate
Lactate Pyruvate Alcohol
dehydrogenase. dehydrogenase. dehydrogenase.
,The oxidative decarboxylation of pyruvate.
• Before entering TCA cycle, pyruvate must converted into Acetyle
CoA.
This is done by a multi-enzyme complex located in the mitochondrial
matrix; Pyruvate dehydrogenase complex.
• Pyruvate Acetyl CoA
– This reaction provide a major fuel of the citric acid cycle
– irreversible reaction.
• That means we cannot make pyruvate from Acetyl CoA and also
explains why glucose can not be formed from Acetyl CoA in
gluconeogenesis.
, • Pyruvate synthesizes in cytoplasm
• Pyruvate dehydrogenase complex is
present in the matrix of mitochondria
• It enters mitochondria via transporter
protein
