MEANING AND IMPORTANCE OF ART

Art – is from Italian word “artis” defined as a human creative skill, includes its application, craftsmanship,
skill, inventiveness, mastery of form and association of the use of forms and ideas and the utilization of
materials and techniques.

- Has a significant part in a persons’ life. Through Art, man witnesses the transformation of himself from
primitive person to a highly cultured individual and is able to see the changes made through time and is
able to conceptualize reality, realize goals and ideals and create a meaning of life.

- Contains man-made creativity, when used in practical life with artistic principals, tastes and skills
benefits and satisfies a person.

- it may use art to communicate through the use of media or materials as forms of expression such as:
1. paintings,
2. song compositions and melodies
3. Literatures
4. Dances
5. dramatic portrayals to highlight important or memorable events.

- It is the need of man to express his feelings, emotions or thoughts in a perfect and enjoyable way
through proper composition of significant qualities of nature such as:
1. Colors
2. Sounds
3. lines,
4. movements,
5. words
6. bronze
7. stones
8. wood
9. films

- contributes to the reform of man’s unusual behavior into social order. It helps man to surmount the
feeling of:

THE FOUR MAIN FUNCTIONS OF ART ARE:
1. Aesthetic Function – man becomes aware of the beauty of nature through arts. He learns thru his
and others work which moves him to use, love, preserve and care for the environment for his
pleasure and appreciation.
2. Utilization Function – art enriches man’s life. The basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter,
medicine and other necessities and conveniences in life such as language, beautiful environment,
transportation and personal accessories are provided by arts to man. Also art enhances nature
through landscaping, gardening, construction of roads and highways, and propagation and
conservation of natural resources.
3. Cultural Function – through books, clippings, magazines and other printed matters, art is
transmitted and skills and knowledge are preserved and handed from one generation to another.
It becomes the basis and source of one’s cultural background and makes man more educated and
refine and his life more substantial and lasting.
4. Social Function – civic and graphic arts evoke emotions conveying love and generosity make man
learn to empathize and cooperate. Collective behavior is influence by art and is manifested by the
way men think, feel and decide. Catchy words and striking designs presented in vivid color can
attract and present social realities that can muster a phenomenon of change.
