THE ART OF PUBLIC SPEAKING

Public Speaking is the process of speaking to a group of people in a structured, deliberate manner
intended to inform, influence or entertain the listeners. It is closely allied to “presenting” although the latter
has more of a commercial advertisement.

In public speaking, as in any form of communication, there are five basic elements, often expressed as
“who is saying what to whom using what medium with what effects?” The purpose of public speaking can
range from simply transmitting information, to motivating people to act, to simply telling a story. Good
orators should be able to change the emotions of their listeners, not just inform them. Public speaking can
also be considered a discourse community. Interpersonal communication and public speaking have several
components that embrace such things as motivational speaking, leadership/personal development, business,
customer service, large group communication and mass communication. Public speaking can be powerful tool
to use for purpose such as motivation, influence, persuasion, informing, translation or simply ethos.

Public speaking is an art. Just like literature and painting. But is useful art and it is a skill that can be
applied, this is why most people do not enjoy public speaking for itself, but what it can do, and it is an
instrumental art.

Why is public speaking important?
1. it is the development of personal confidence that promotes self-esteem.
2. being able to stand in front of people, express fluent, clear and organized thoughts
3. it will slowly sharpen the way you think and speak.
4. by involving yourself with public speaking, you will be able to perform useful functions for society
5. ability to promote your opinions and ideas which contribute to the welfare of the society easily.
6. can able to do research, investigate issue, assemble, organize your materials and present the
materials effectively to the audience.
7. you will know how to use the resources around you such as the library, internet and other kind of
information to your benefits.
8. helps you to be more organized and be more effective in assembling all issues, claims and evidence
in a proper and right ways.
9. you will know your objective, managing your time and be more responsible in getting the right
message to your audience.
10. you learned how to thinks straight, mange your anxiousness and learn how to convey your idead
in the most understandable language.

Kinds of Speeches

1.) Persuasive speech – is written to persuade, or convince the listeners, of the validity of the speaker’s
argument.
- Involves persuading someone to change their opinion or at the very least take into
account some elements that have not really been considered before.

The Main Elements of Writing a Persuasive Speech
1. Credibility – establish credibility by demonstrating expertise, evidence and knowledge of the subject-
presenting facts, statistics or quotes together with any personal experiences to make the audience believe in
what you are saying.
2. Passion – conveying the subject with enthusiasm, passion and conviction to appeal to the emotions of the
audience.

The Structure and Outline of a Persuasive Speech
1. Your Opener – the opening, ice-breaker or attention grabber
2. Introduction – tell them what the speech is about and what your main points will be.
3. Credibility – establish your credibility by demonstrating expertise, evidence and knowledge of the subject –
presenting facts, statistics or quotes together with any personal experiences to make the audience believe in
what you are saying.
