Paul Virilio – The third interval
With the coming of the new teletechnologies our critical space,our sense
of time and space is lost and will have to be looked at in a new ‘light’(the
third interval)
Because we loose track of the time-space notion we loose track of reality.
This because we can live in the now,the present but also later. Technologie
makes us faster in communicating and also makes us longer
communicators.
Digital communication takes over our presence of our physical body. We
can be in multiple places at the same time.Our bodies becomes no more
than receivers and sending machines.
Therefore our existence becomes very isolated , we live in digital worlds.
This also means that our national unity feeling disappears. Bigger cities
become more crowded but less interactive.
We mistake real speed for virtual speed. Because we live in our technology
worlds and because technology is almost as fast as the speed of light.(the
third interval) Therefore we think we are as fast as the speed of light
aswell.
WE think with this digitalrevolution we don’t have to live like we used to
live anymore. We don’t have to ‘live’ or interact with the world physically
anymore. So all that we created on the planet will not be of use anymore
because we have technology .
The good thing about technology is that everyone can be part of
society(like handicapt) but the big downside to the digital revolution is that
our world will end up in no more than lonely individuals and
telecommunication as asociety.
