Understanding where we started as a profession will allow for more innovative advances and diverse understandings in the field. It is through continued education and competencies that this is ultimately achieved. In 1854, Florence Nightingale was approached by the British army to form a group of caretakers to attend to sick and injured soldiers in the Crimea war. It was during this war that nursing initially took form. The circumstances found upon arrival were disgraceful. Nightingale discovered wounded soldiers that were kept in amongst filth, and disease. It was also found that most of the water was contaminated. Nightingale found that using keeping the solders clean was the first step toward healing. Soon after Nightingales arrival, the hospital’s bereavement rate diminished by two-thirds. When Nightingale returned to England she wrote transcripts on issues that directly affected the health and wellbeing of people with illnesses. It was in an 830- page report appraising her involvements in the Crimea that Nightingale reported her established findings. This was the beginning of nursing as a profession and when it took its hold on the medical world. The book later helped reform several military hospitals and helped establish a Royal Commission for the Health of the Army in 1857 ("History of Nursing Education: In Our Past, Lies Our Future", 2010). 2) TEACHING, SCHOLARSHIP, AND LEADERSHIP 3 Within three years, Nightingale aiding in the creation and funding of the St. Thomas Hospital Nightingale Training School for Nurses. In 1873, three nurse education programs – the New York Training School, the Connecticut Training School and the Boston Training School – all began operations. All schools were founded on ideas by Nightingale, and are generally acknowledged to be the first organized schools of professional nursing education in the United States. By the early 20th century, nursing was quickly becoming a growing profession. Most hospitals considered nurses essential to patient care and registered nurses were using their skills to provide quality care to patients outside of traditional healthcare institutions. By 1960, roughly 170 college-based nursing education programs offered Bachelors of Science in Nursing degrees (BSN). Experts determined that better educated nurses should be given more responsibilities and be given the opportunity to work in advanced healthcare fields. As the health needs of patients became more complex hospitals and healthcare institutions began requiring nurses to obtain a BSN degree (Committee, O. T. R. W. J., 2010). As history progresses educational institutions nationally are morphing and changing in order to stay ahead of the ever-changing challenges of medical advances, academic systems, and faculty roles. In the progressively multifaceted learning environment, faculty have become an essential part of this development. With faculty roles, there is also the creation of scholarship relevant to the field of the individual faculty members (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2017). 3) TEACHING, SCHOLARSHIP, AND LEADERSHIP 4 Scholarship in nursing is defined the actions that methodically promote the evolution of education, research, and skill sets of nursing through thorough review (American Assoc
