Citizenship, Public participation and Democracy CPD1501 Citizenship by birth A person qualifies for the acquisition of South African citizenship by birth if he or she was a South African citizen by birth immediately prior to 01 January 2013. If he or she was born in or outside the Republic and one of his or her parents, at the time of his or her birth, is a South African citizen. Citizenship by descent If he or she was a South African citizen by descent immediately prior to the date of commencement of the citizenship amendment act 2010, that is 1 January 2013. A person who has been legally adopted by South African citizen and is registered in terms of the section 13 of the Births and Deaths Registration Act 51 of 1992.
