Researching conflicts/Global Health Research: Dr Hassaan Afzal is an Accident and Emergency
doctor with experience as an expedition medic and in refugee camps his research focuses on attacks
on healthcare workers in conflict zones and on measures to reduce the risk and impact of attack.
Research on Impacts of Attacks on Healthcare at HCRI show that not everyone has access to
healthcare. HCRI is a collaborative center that works with academic institutions, but don’t
provide funding for research that academics undertake. HCRI helps researchers to get the
right contacts/help that they need.
WHO made addressing the problem of attacks on health care a priority. WHO collaborates
with academic institutions to produce research, guidance and policy. Both a scoping review
(systematic review but less rigorous) and a Delphi study (experts who give their opinion on
the issue) have been performed.
His job is to produce preliminary research specific to the impacts of attacks on healthcare. He
also developed and rolled out the Surveillance System for Attacks on Healthcare (the
collected data is verified with 2 or 3 sources). The number of attacks doesn’t focus on the
consequences; this is discussed in his research papers. His next step is developing a
prediction model, when attacks might happen.
Challenges of starting in Global Health Research: getting funding, finding the right institutions
who are willing to support the research, and it’s difficult without much overseas (and
methodological) experience (in global health research). Things are improving with a Global
Emergency Care Collaborative (GECCo) and Global Health Fellowships, to help medics to get
into global health research specifically.
Researching terrorism: Daan Weggemans is program director of the BSc Security Studies and
researcher at the Institute for Security and Global Affairs he works on deradicalization/reintegration
processes of violent extremists and new terrorism strategies and technologies.
There’s no research on the re-integration of terrorists when they get out of prison, because
these people can’t be found easily (doing research in prisons is easier, you only need to
obtain a permit from the ministry to enter the facilities). He felt that asking about former-
terrorists in the neighborhood is uncomfortable/unethical, because people have the right to
a new life.
The police wanted to fund his research proposal, when a lot of terrorists came back to the
Netherlands after they went to Syria, because suddenly there were terrorists in prison (it
wasn’t researchable before because of the lack of possible participants). He wanted to
interview 25 former-terrorists (this is a lot!), who have been to prison and returned into
society. However, he forgot to think his strategy through, before he got the funding.
