Eng1503 Portfolio examination. Academic Language And Literacy In English. Paragraph writing Question 1: By reading the passage, Maya Angelou loved her son dearly. This is evident when she plans to spend weeks with a friend of a colleague just to settle her son into university, also suggesting that she sees her son as a small child. It is shown in paragraph 5 that Maya and Guy (her son) loved laughing, suggesting that the pair had a great sense of humour. When Guy was hospitalised, his mother never left his side showing how wonderful their relationship was. She also calls her son ‘home’ revealing where her heart is: in her son. Question 2: The passage shows us that before the accident, Maya and Guy’s home was in Egypt where Guy finished his high school years and he was in excellent health in this country. They moved to Ghana when Guy was supposed to start university. Their new home did not treat them well as Guy got injured and was hospitalised. During this time, the writer shows the pain of seeing her son lying in his hospital bed not wanting him to die because he is his home, if he dies, she would be homeless. This is when the writer changed her definition of home to be her son. Question 3: They could have seen that Ghanaians are very traditional people. This means they would eat traditional cuisine; they would have also noticed that the women of Ghana do not wear pants but only traditional attires that covers the whole body. The people of Ghana speak different languages from the ones they heard. There is a lot of fishing in Ghana as they are close to the coast and there are lot of ships coming in Accra. There are national parks in Ghana meaning they would see different wild animals. The first reported case of COVID-19 was in September 2019 in Wuhan, China (2020: Bennet). The problem with SARS-CoV-2 is the pressure it puts on the healthcare system because of its high infection rate(Khoza:345, 2019 ). Globally, sudden spikes in the confirmed COVID-19 cases are severe because there are limited resources to effectively manage and treat patients in any of the current healthcare systems. As of February 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared SARS-CoV-1 a pandemic as one of the first biological threats to modern society in the 21st century. In order for the South African government to reduce the widespread of SARS-CoV-2, travelling restrictions were placed on high-risk regions and border-crossings were closed from one country to another. On the 28th of February 2020, South Africa experienced the first COVID-19 case and as of the 25th of March 2020, the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases increased to 702, despite efforts to contain the virus by putting a ban on international travel. The increase in confirmed cases may cause widespread panic and anxiety, which is why the public relies on good, reliable information and data, now more than ever. The question on everybody’s mind is simple: When will the Coronavirus pandemic end, so we can return to our previous lives? The answer is, even if the pandemic ends, our lives as we know it will never be the same. As Malala, J (2020) said, “… When we finally emerge on the other side of the Covid-19 pandemic, battered and bruised, we will be a different country…”. This essay outlines the impact Covid-19 will leave on some factors in post-pandemic society. Our daily lives are ordered by innumerable behaviors and actions that happen on auto-pilot (Strong, 1990, p 258). Many of the auto-pilot behaviors are related to social interaction with friends. With Covid-19 in our society, it is difficult to spend time with friends. We must now use social media platforms to interact with our friends as opposed to face-to-face interactions. For example, I now use and Facebook to stay in contact with my friends. Even after the pandemic, a lot of us hesitate to spend face-to-face time with friends. This pandemic also affects the lives of scholars and university students, this will cause a higher dropout rate in schools and universities after the pandemic. The Covid-19 pandemic also affects a person psychologically. According to the PubMed website, “… lockdowns can produce acute panic, anxiety, obsessive behaviors, hoarding, paranoia, and depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the long run.” When the person is infected by this virus, they go into quarantine. Quarantined individuals frequently stress thinking they will die; they hope to be removed from quarantine as soon as possible. If they are quarantined for too long, they suffer from depression and lose weight and confidence in treatment, some have suicidal thoughts and eventually commit suicide. People also develop obsessive behaviors during this time, for example, hoarding. Using South Africa and China as my example, the shutting-down of industrial facilities in China has brought about a lower request for South African trades of minerals and other resources into Chinese value chains. Since other countries have shut down parts of their economies, these impacts have increased in scale and severity. This means South Africa is no longer just exporting less to China, but most other nations too. There has also been an increase in most product prices and services, taxi fares, for example, are now increasing by up to R7.00.(eNCA,2020) Personally, the Covid-19 has affected me greatly. We now cannot visit our friends and loved ones without adhering to social distancing. Social events have also been closed, which is what used to bring happiness in the youth. The high rising of unemployment rate in our country is troubling as this pandemic continues. We are now also forced to stay, study and write examinations at home. This is troubling as a nation. In conclusion, the Covid-19 pandemic is here to stay. Our lives are deeply affected by this virus that has spread throughout the world. For us to have a future without this virus, we must adhere by the rules set out by the government. After all, we want to return to our previous lives. When I first saw the topics that were given, I said to myself, “what on earth were my tutors thinking giving us these topics? Must I now start researching about the Coronavirus? I mean, isn’t it bad enough that we are in lockdown!’’ Well, I did research and funny enough, there were interesting findings on this pandemic. It took me two full days to complete my essay, and I even lost weight during that time. What else can I say about this essay, oh yes, my sister was worried when I was only concentrating in my work and not having time to play with my niece, even though that was the case, it was nice to just research about the disease that is affecting our nation. It was a nice research, yes, but putting pen to paper was a nightmare. I had to be careful not to plagiarize someone's work and to provide my own experiences, now, where was I going to come up with that since I had been at home the whole time since the pandemic started. The only experience I thought of was the fact that socializing places are closed. The truth though is that I just wanted to finish writing that essay and carry on with my portfolio. I also cannot wait for the results to come out so I can see how I did in my essay because I trust that I did well. But my final words are: What an essay
