CHEM 102 Week 1 Pre-lab & Lab 1
CHEM 102 Week 1 Pre-lab & Lab 1CHEM 102 Week 1 Pre-lab & Lab 1 Prelab: Using the Scientific Method 1 point for each complete answer, 5 points total. Atoms and molecules spontaneously flow from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration in a process known as diffusion. The rate of diffusion is affected by many factors including the molar mass of the diffusing substance, temperature, and the physical state of the diffusion medium. Different physical mediums will cause a change in the rate of diffusion primarily due to the degree of disorder and movement in each system. As we move from a solid to a liquid, to a gas, more and more movement and disorder is present in the system. In this prelab you will design a study investigating how the physical state of the medium affects the rate of diffusion of Red 40 dye. When you get into lab, you will conduct the experiment and use the results to generate a theory and reflect on the experiment. You will be provided with the following materials: -A plate containing solid agar -A plate containing water -A ruler -A graduated cylinder -A small quantity of Red 40 dye powder
