P3: Explain factors that may influence communication and interpersonal interactions in health and
social care environments
There are many factors that result in barriers to communication. These can include for example
language, disabilities, religious values, culture, background noise, sensory impairments, personality,
distance, learning difficulties, speech dysfluency, confidentiality, expectations and prejudices of
individuals, use of professional jargon, illnesses, mental health problems, listening skills, reading
skills, writing skills and speaking skills. I’m going to explain five of these factors in greater detail
below.
Factors that may influence communication and interpersonal interactions in a health and social care
environment may be firstly language. This could be considered as a barrier for instance in a hospital
setting where a french elderly woman may be going into emergency surgery. This woman will need
support and comfort before going in for the operation, as she could be feeling anxious and scared as
this may be a serious operation. She needs to consent to the surgery and understand the possible
complications and benefits. As she is French and speaks little English. She will need a language
translator so she is informed on what is going to happen and feels safe in the care of the doctors and
nurses. However, it will become a barrier if there is no language translator as she will not feel any
comfort nor support and will not understand what’s happening.
Another factor that would be a barrier to communication would be if a child, a girl of nine has a
speech dysfluency with learning difficulties and attends a special needs school. For instance she may
need the toilet so will need to communicate with the teachers and carers but due to her disability
she will find it increasingly hard to express her need. This may lead this girl to feeling like she cannot
do things for herself and feel frustrated at herself for not being able to communicate a daily need,
therefore lowering her self- esteem and confidence.
