GGH1503_ Our Living Earth Assignment 2 Semester 2.
GGH1503_ Our Living Earth Assignment 2 Semester 2. GGH1503 - Our Living Earth. Briefly differentiate between passive and active solar heating systems. (4) “Active solar power setups rely on external energy sources – or backup systems, such as radiators and heat pumps — to capture, store and then convert solar energy into electricity. The solar collectors use liquid or air as conductors to store and convert energy. Those that use liquid are known as hydronic collectors, while those that contain air are called air collectors.” (Conserve Energy Future) “Passive solar systems: In contrast to active solar systems, passive systems operate without the reliance on external devices. Instead of using PV panels, passive collectors usually rely on south-facing windows to convert rays into sunlight.” (Conserve Energy Future) b. List four ways you can save energy in your current place of residence. (2) Replace the regular light bulbs with energy saving light bulbs Do laundry once a week. Collect rainwater to wash the car or water the plants. Use a power strip/ power bank to charge electronics. c. Miller (2011) lists a number of renewable energy options as an alternative for nonrenewable energy sources. In a well-motivated essay, discuss which renewable energy option, in your opinion, is best for South Africa currently. (14) “Alternative energy is the way of the future. Alternative energy is the term for any energy that is not traditionally produced. Solar power, hydropower and wind power are all forms of electricity production that are considered to be alternative. Burning fuels as a means to produce energy has greatly contributed to the climate change and general pollution within the atmosphere. Using alternative energy means that there will be far less pollution, allowing the Earth time to restore itself to a healthier state.”(Greenleaf) “Every renewable energy article will include solar power as a form of alternative energy. Solar power takes the energy from the Sun and converts it into electricity that can be used in homes and businesses. Energy from the sun is completely renewable and with advancements being made each year, the harnessing of this power is only going to become more and more efficient. This form of electricity can be a bit pricey with the initial set up but thereafter a consumer is going to see massive savings.” (Greenleaf) “The future of electricity lies with renewable energy and with these kinds of methods that will eventually be used on a large scale. But for now, there are ways that you can generate your own electricity. Think about investing in solar systems to keep your home or business running at minimum costs.” (Greenleaf).
