, What is a cell?
The cell (from Latin “cella”, meaning small room) is a
structural and functional unit of body of living body.
Cells are basic building blocks of all living things.
They provide structure for body, take nutrients from
food and convert them into energy. They also
contain hereditary material of body.
Discovery of cell:
Cell was discovered and named by Robert Hooke in
1665.The invention of microscope led to the
discovery of cell. While looking at cork, he observed
box shaped structures, which he called “cells”.
He remarked that it looked strangely similar to
cellula or small rooms which monks inhabited.
However what Hooke actually saw was the dead cell
walls of plant cell (cork).
