TB: what precautions are we using? Airborne. a. What does airborne mean? N-95 mask, negative pressure rooms. b. What are some of the medications they take? Ethambutol, Isoniazid. c. How long do they take these medications? 6-9 months, it is long term use of antibiotics. d. Education we need to give them? No ETOH (alcohol), medication compliance, stick with doses, and continue it all the way through. e. How can we make sure they are taking all their doses? Encourage to follow up with us, go to clinics, and keep their appointments. f. Difference between diagnosis and screening of TB? Diagnosis: Sputum culture is the best definitive diagnosis of TD, real clear sure way. PPD is NOT a diagnosis. Positive PPD only means you have had exposure, had it in the past, and even people who have been exposed to multiple PPD tests may test positive. Only means exposure, not active disease. If you have a positive PPD, then get a chest x ray to see if we have anything that seems suspicious, then we will do a sputum culture to diagnose it.
