, 1.1 What is Internet?
• The Internet, sometimes called simply "the Net," is a worldwide system of computer
networks - a network of networks in which users at any one computer can, if they
have permission, get information from any other computer (and sometimes talk
directly to users at other computers).
• Originally the Internet served to interconnect laboratories engaged in government
research, and since 1994 it has been expanded to serve millions of users and a
multitude of purposes in all parts of the world.
• In a matter of very few years, the Internet has consolidated itself as a very powerful
platform that has changed the way we do business, and the way we communicate.
