The word cell was first used by Robert Hooke in 1665 when he observed a sample of cork
under his microscope. The individual shapes reminded him of the individual rooms that
make up a monastery
A cell is the smallest working unit of a living organism
Today we look at cells more like the individual bricks that make up a building. Each brick is important to the
structure of the building, thus each cell is important to the structure of the organism (living thing).
All living organisms are made of cells - some are made of just one cell, for example bacteria - some are made of
thousands, millions or even trillions of cells, for example humans.
