ETHC 445N Week 7 Discussion; Virtuous Person, Virtuous Citizen (2 Versions)
Required Resources Read/review the following resources for this activity: • Textbook: Chapter12 • Lesson • Minimum of 1 scholarly source (in addition to thetextbook) Introduction Each person owes a duty to himself or herself and to the world to study ethics and to engage in thoughtful debate about what is right, and what is wrong. It is this habit of thinking about and reflecting on ethics that will help you determine the right choices when faced with an ethical dilemma. Initial Post Instructions Articulate a moral dilemma wherein one has to show a specific virtue or virtues (it can be any virtue or virtues including honesty, courage, charity/generosity, compassion, etc.) • What is the moral dilemmaabout? • What virtue or virtues should be shown? (You are here selecting the best course ofaction) • Why is that virtue or those virtues to beshown? • How should the virtue or virtues be expressed, and why in thatmanner? • Apply Aristotle's golden mean to thedilemma. • Tell us how the dilemma involves conflict moral duties (loyalty to community versus to self, professional versus familial duties, national or personal obligations). The dilemma must be a situation in which a choice has to be made. Be sure you told us why your chosen course of action was best. Week 7 Discussion (Version 1) A moral dilemma... Homeless people sometimes have to go to the emergency room, they often try to take advantage of the emergency room for warm meals, a bed to sleep in, and also want to take showers. The dilemma is to help the homeless or kick them from the hospital. The virtue is to show compassion and kindness when helping the homeless since they have nowhere else to turn. The healthcare workers should understand that these homeless individuals face many issues such as unemployment that leads to poverty or trauma like domestic violence, etc. But if their health is threatened they'll look past a shelter and go to a hospital and try to survive. (Stafford & Wood 2017) The virtue should be shown as a helping hand, and help the homeless with resources, the hospital. The reason being is because of the expression of care, which health care persons should show. Aristotle claims "a kind of schematic of virtues to becontrasted with an excess of the chosen virtue and the deficiency of it." (Week 7 Lesson)Although the homeless should be helped, it should not affect the hospital to provide good care. This dilemma gives a conflict of loyalty to the community to self, personal wishes that can help the most needed may affect the availability of health resources to the community. Week 7 Discussion (Version 2) Hello class and professor, One moral dilemma that arises is the overburden of the homeless population on the emergency room system. Many times, homeless individuals pay visits to the emergency room for a hot meal, bed to sleep on, and a place to bathe. These visits require resources and manpower which increase patient load on health care providers and wait time for individuals that are inacute need. The dilemma at hand is helping the homeless or kicking them out. The virtue that should be shown is compassion and generosity when hospitals take on that burden of helping the homeless. Providers should understand that these individuals have nowhere to turn. Furthermore, understand that these individuals face issues such as, “psychological trauma, poverty, unemployment, domestic violence and social disconnection” (Stafford et al., 2017 p.1). The virtue should be expressed in the form of a helping hand and point them to available resources to help these individuals. The reason why this should be the case is because it's the embodiment of care, which healthcare providers should uphold. Aristotle’s mean is described as a “schematic of virtues to be contrasted with an excess of the chosen virtue and the deficiency of it” (Chamberlain, 2020, p.4). With this in mind it would be recommended that although the homeless should be helped, it shouldn't interfere with the hospitals ability to provide competent care. This dilemma provides a conflict of loyalty to community versus to self. For instance, personal wishes to help the needy may decrease availability of healthcare resources to the community.
