QUESTION 1 Metz claims that Western and African philosophies have six matching moral principles that include: murder for money; non-consensual sex or rape; deception except self-defense or defense of others; theft of unnecessary goods; violation of trust; racial discrimination in resource allocation.1 He further indicated that African philosophies have six other principles not found in western philosophy. Metz argues that African moral judgments are values more widespread in African societies than in Western societies.2 The six principles are that: rather than dissent over unpopular decisions African moral judgements promotes consensus; it prefers reconciliation over retribution as a fundamental and central aim of criminal justice; it prefer a cooperative, socialist economy rather than a competitive capitalist one; it preferred a need based distribution of wealth as opposed to individual rights; It prefer communal living other than individualism; and lastly it promotes family values over failure to marry and procreate. 3 Metz makes a deeper analysis of what he terms six competing theoretical interpretations of Ubuntu. He highlights the how the principles of Ubuntu with the other twelve principles of African philosophy. He highlights the right and wrong actions insofar as human dignity, humanity, the well-being of others, human rights, solidarity, and harmony, characteristics of Ubuntu.4
